Stadio dei Marmi, sports venue
The Stadio dei Marmi is located in the Foro Italico, a colossal sports complex which was originally called Foro Mussolini. Originally designed by the architect Enrico Del Debbio in the 1920s, the stadium was built to honor Benito Mussolini and the National Fascist Party of Italy. It was inaugurated in 1932 on the 10th anniversary of the March on Rome, to serve as a training facility for the Fascist Academy of Physical Education. Located in the Roman neighborhood of Monte Mario, the Stadio dei Marmi stands out from the other three stadiums in Foro Italico thanks to its magnificent marble statues. These sixty sculptures, 4 meters high, were all made from the white marble of Carrara. During the twenty-year Fascist period, Mussolini used sports to introduce and reinforce fascist values, with the intention of forming devoted young warriors. Sure enough, the Stadio dei Marmi was the perfect embodiment of this project. The Stadio dei Marmi played host to the opening ceremony of the 2009 World Aquatics Championships, in addition to to the field hockey qualifiers of the 1960 Summer Olympics.
