Sardar Sarovar Dam, Hydroelectric dam in Gujarat, India
The Sardar Sarovar Dam is a large hydroelectric dam on the Narmada river in the state of Gujarat, India.
Construction began in 1987 and was completed in 2017 after many delays due to environmental and rehabilitation issues.
The dam is named after Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, a key political leader in the Indian independence movement and the first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister of India.
It provides water for drinking, irrigation, and industrial use in four states, and generates hydroelectric power.
It's the second largest concrete gravity dam (by volume) and third highest concrete dam (by height) in India.
