Cavern of the Patriarchs, Sacred site in West Bank
The Cave of the Patriarchs, also known as the Cave of Machpelah, is a series of subterranean chambers located in the heart of the old city of Hebron.
According to Jewish, Christian and Islamic tradition, the cave and adjoining field were purchased by Abraham as a burial plot.
It is considered the second holiest site in Judaism, and is also sacred to Christians and Muslims.
Today, the site is divided into two sections: one half for Muslim worshippers and the other half for Jewish worshippers.
Despite being a source of ongoing conflict, it remains a significant religious site that attracts thousands of visitors each year.
