Bodhi Tree, Sacred fig in India
The Bodhi Tree, also known as Bo and 'peepal tree' in Nepal and Bhutan, is a large and ancient sacred fig tree.
It is under this tree that Gautama Buddha, the spiritual teacher and founder of Buddhism, is said to have attained enlightenment.
The tree is revered by Buddhists, and pilgrimages are made to the ancient city of Bodh Gaya in India where it is located.
The original tree was destroyed, but a new one was planted at the same site.
A cutting from the original tree was taken to Sri Lanka, where it grew into the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi tree, which is now the oldest living human-planted tree in the world with a known planting date.
