Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, War memorial in Italy
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a monument dedicated to the soldiers who lost their lives during World War I and whose bodies were never identified.
Inaugurated in 1921, it is located within the Altare della Patria in Rome.
It symbolizes the sacrifice of all Italian soldiers who fought for their country, known or unknown.
Visitors can view the eternal flame and the guards of honor who stand watch over the tomb.
The soldier buried here was chosen from among 11 unknown remains by Maria Bergamas, a mother whose son was missing in action.
