Elephanta Caves, Rock cut architecture in India
The Elephanta Caves are a network of sculpted caves located on Elephanta Island, or Gharapuri in Mumbai Harbour.
The caves were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 for their artistic value and historical significance.
The cave temples primarily dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva are a testament to a civilization that has disappeared.
To reach the Elephanta Caves, one must take a ferry from Gateway of India, Mumbai.
The most important among the caves is Cave 1, which measures 39 metres from the front entrance to the back.
